Like or dislike? Facebook may soon add Dislike button to site

Not all images on the Facebook are worth liking. Not all status updates are agreeable. Not everything that your friends say on the Facebook makes sense. So how do you deal with it? Currently, you can ignore that obnoxious photo that your friend posted. But soon Facebook may add a "Dislike" button on the website, giving people a way to express themselves when they don't like something.

Facebook CEO mark Zuckerberg said on Tuesday that his company was working on such a button. "I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we're working on it and shipping it," Zuckerberg said during a Q&A session at Facebook Town Hall meeting.

Zuckerberg talked about giving people more options to express themselves last year when he said that Facebook needed to look into ways how such button could be implemented.

"There's something that's just so simple about the Like button... but giving people more ways of expressing more emotions would be powerful We need to figure out the right way to do it (complex emotions) so it ends up being a force for good, not a force for bad and demeaning the posts that people are putting out there," he had said.

For now it is not clear how Facebook would implement a Dislike button. Unlike the Like button, which aims to connect people in an easy and effortless way, the Dislike button may end up making Facebook a little bit more complex, just the way real world is.

Zuckerberg, for now, hasn't yet revealed how the company would implement and interpret something like dislike or unlike, which lacks positive vibe to it. But speculation around the web is that Facebook may not be looking to give people a way to plainly and bluntly dislike something. For example, if you want to dislike a duck-face selfie photo posted by your friend, you may not get that option with the new button. Instead, the social media site is probably working on a kind of button that may help users sympathise and empathise with their friends in their hour of grief or bad news.
