Hello to readers of my blog, i am angel and today i am going to write about something important about the Metadata and its risk associated with the data you upload on internet like pictures.
Why metadata can be a risk for your privacy?
the photos taken with the iPhone and other smart phones save the GPS coordinates of where and when the picture was taken and store it in the meta data of the picture, similarly for office documents.
anyone can trackback you using these metadata information, hence it is important to remove your personal metadata from file.
How to Remove Metadata ?
there is tool name MAT you can this tool to remove personal metadata, MAT (Metadata Anonymisation Toolkit) is a toolbox composed of a GUI application, a CLI application and a library, to anonymize/remove metadata.
Please note the currently supported formats. In terms of pictures, jpg, jpeg and png. But unfortunately MAT is not perfect and I wouldn’t solely rely on it, so a better idea would be to never upload pictures of yourself or your significant other online, especially bragging about a hack you committed.
And what about EXIF Data ?
EXIF data stands for Exchangeable image file format and affects JPG, JPEF, TIF and WAV files. A photo taken with a GPS-enabled camera can reveal the exact location and time it was taken, and the unique ID number of the device – this is all done by default – often without the user’s knowledge.
To avoid this, only take photos that use PNG because it does not store EXIF data. To check if your photo has any revealing EXIF data attached to it, check out this site.
