Microsoft lumia 550 whats the story so far ?

Microsoft has a press event scheduled for 6 October and is expected to unveil a whole host of hardware. We've seen talk of the Surface Pro 4, Lumia 950 and 950 XL flagship Windows 10 phones, as well as a new Microsoft Band 2.

Then there are rumours about a more affordable Windows 10 phone, the Microsoft Lumia 550. There has been a lot less chatter about this device, so there's still some uncertainty surrounding it - especially considering that it's only marginally different to existing Microsoft Lumia hardware that will receive the Windows 10 for Mobile upgrade. There's even been the suggestion that this device has been cancelled and won't launch.

However, here's what we know about the Lumia 550.

The Lumia 550, much like the other handsets in the Lumia family appears similarly simple. Typically Lumia handsets use a polycarbonate build and this handset appears to follow that trend for a plastic feel to the rear of the casing.

The Lumia 550 is expected to arrive in four colour variants of white, red, blue and black, with Lumia devices being known for offering a wide range of colours.

The handset looks to follow in the stylings of the Lumia 640, the handset released earlier in 2015, although tracing the numbering logic through Microsoft's mid-range phones can sometimes be a challenge.

A lot of the specs for the Lumia 550 leaked on what appears to be an official presentation slide. This first appeared on Forever Nokia but has since been removed, but not before it had been shown off elsewhere.

Some rumours say that the Microsoft Lumia 550 will come with a 5-inch 1280 x 720 display, making for 294ppi. Others are suggesting a low resolution of 960 x 540, although we can't help feeling that might just be too low in resolution for a modern device launch. It's also been reported that this might be a 4.7-inch device.

The display should come topped with Gorilla Glass 3 to keep it safe from scratches.

Powering the device should be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor and 1GB of RAM. This features a 1.1GHz quad-core Cortex A7 CPU. The handset should also be Cat 4 LTE connected for download speeds of up to 150Mbps.

Storage is expected to be 8GB but there should also be an option to expand that using microSD up to 128GB.

Powering everything should be a 1,905mAh battery, offering fast charging.
The Lumia 550 should come with 5-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras, which would very much mark this out as an entry level device. The rear camera has an LED flash, but it's previously been suggested that there could be a front-facing flash too. Either that, or the Lumia 550 could be equipped with an iris scanner, reported to be coming to the Lumia 950 models. This might just be a case of crossed wires, however.

Windows 10 has already shown off what can be expected from Lumia cameras. Microsoft has already said it will be reducing the number of camera apps on Windows Phone meaning no more Lumia Storyteller, Lumia Beamer, Lumia Refocus and more.
We don't use the word cheap often, but this phone really is going to be just that. In a good way.

The Lumia 550 is rumoured to cost just $120 which is about £85.
