The government is going to set up a Rs 500-crore centre to tackle the rising cyber crimes.
A Rs 500-crore centre is expected to be set up by the government soon to deal with cyber crimes, which are increasing by 40 per cent annually. The move comes after an expert committee, set up to prepare a roadmap to effectively tackle cyber crime in the country and give suitable recommendations to combat it, submitted its report to Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday.
Among the recommendations, the committee suggested the government set up the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (ICCCC) at the national level with proposed branches in all states. The Centre will have linkages with Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) and the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), the two databases having information related to crime and criminals.
One of the priorities of ICCCC will be how to check attempts of international gangs to penetrate Indian government official communication networks and hack them. An advanced application for social media analytics may also come up to monitor social media platforms activities related to Ministries of Home, External Affairs, Defence and other government organisations.
The committee also suggested the government to reduce dependence on foreign servers and ensure a dedicated secure gateway for all government communication. The home minister has asked all concerned for immediate processing and implementation of the report called 'Roadmap for Effectively Tackling Cyber Crimes in the Country'.
The expert group was constituted by the home ministry on December 24, 2014, a home ministry release later said.
After a presentation from the members of the committee, the home minister expressed keen interest in issues relating to cyber crime and its impact on the public. He extensively dwelt on activities on the internet which directly impacted the general public, particularly women and children, and the establishment of appropriate infrastructure to redress such grievances in convenient and time.
